Establishing a Culture for Learning
What is Component 2B?
Teachers and students should be gaining knowledge in the classroom that they can carry with them throughout their lifetimes. This knowledge can be gained through establishing a culture for learning in the classroom. In order to do this, every member of the classroom (including teachers) must give their all in everything that they do and all of the work they submit.
Why Do We Need Component 2B?
We need Component 2B because a classroom should be a place where learning new things is natural and encouraged. Both teacher and students should be contributing to this "learning atmosphere." The atmosphere created should encourage students to work hard, get creative, and be proud of the work that they do in class. In a classroom that creates a culture for learning, there also needs to be standards and expectations set for the students such as participating in class, following rules and completing work.
Elements of Component 2B:
The first element of this component is Importance of Content and of Learning. In this element, the students should be actively participating in lessons as well as the content being taught in those lessons. Students should also have the desire to work hard and learn the content being taught. The teacher should also be involved and taking every opportunity to teacher his or her students.
Element 2 of Component 2B is Expectations for Learning and Achievement. In this element, students are provided with difficult expectations from their teacher. While these expectations should be challenging for the students, they should still be obtainable.
The last element of this component is Student Pride in Work. This simply means that students should be completing their best work and be proud of what they accomplish.
Possible Artifacts:
Possible artifacts for this component are examples of student work, examples of expectations/standards set for the students, hard working, diligent students in the classroom, and infographics.
