Knowledge of Students
What is Component 1B?
Component 1B is knowing your students. You must know your students in order to truly be able to teach to their strengths and know their weaknesses. You must build a trust between you and your students in order for them to open up to you about what they may be struggling with academically. As an educator, you must know the needs of each of your students, which is why we must put in the time and effort it takes to get to know them.
Why do we Need Component 1B?
Teachers must know the needs of their students in order to effectively teach them. They must know the strengths of each student, their learning styles, their least restrictive environments, and their areas of struggle. If the teacher knows all of these things, then they can adapt their lessons to best accommodate the way their students learn.
Elements of Component 1B:
Element 1 of this component is Knowledge of Child and Adolescent Development. You must know the developmental stages of your students because the stage that they are in will effect how they learn and process information.
The second element is Knowledge of the Learning Process. We must know the learning styles of our students. If we do not know how our students learn best, then we may not be teaching in a way that they can comprehend the content. It also helps if the teacher knows the cultural differences and interests of their class. This can also help when creating lessons, because you can cater to those different interests when teaching the content.
Element 3 is Knowledge of Students' Language, Knowledge, and Language Proficiency. Teachers must know the students’ skills, knowledge and language proficiency in order to teach effectively because all of these things greatly contribute to the way students learn.
The fourth element of Component 1B is Knowledge of Students' Interests and Cultural Heritage. As teachers, creating lessons that are built around the interests and backgrounds of our students is essential. This makes the content more relatable and much more interesting to the students. It will also help them remember and understand the content better.
Element 5 is Knowledge of Students' Special Needs. Finally, teachers must know any special needs that their students may have. This is necessary because lessons must be adapted for certain needs in order to make the lesson easy to learn for everyone.
Artifacts of Component 2B:
Some artifacts could be adaptations in lesson plans, examples of knowledge of student interests, or student survey.
