Hardware Technology
The camera and video features on a cell phone, tablet, or other device can be very useful tools in the classroom. These features on mobile devices can be used to inform parents what their child is doing in class, and therefore can get them more involved in their child's education because they can actively ask their child questions about specific lessons or activities they have done in class. They can also be used for instruction, for example, at the beginning of the year when the teacher wants to set classroom rules in place, he/she could record a video of a student following the rules and another student disobeying the rules. This way, the students can visually see what is expected of them.
There is also an app that can be downloaded onto a smartphone or tablet called Camscanner. This app allows teachers or students to scan a part of a book and annotate it and print it out. This could be very useful for a teacher if they are not at school and have to create lessons for a substitute. In this case, the teacher can annotate and print out the section of a book he/she wants the students to read or go over. Another use of this tool would be if the teacher only has one copy of a book in the classroom, but he/she wants the whole class to read a section of it. The teacher could then print out the section easily for the class to use.
This hardware all fits into Component 3C, Engaging Students in Learning. It fits into this component because all of these features are more interesting for students than a lecture. They will keep the students more focused and engaged in what is being taught. These tools fit specifically into element 3, which is Instructional Materials and Resources. The camera and video features on mobile devices, as well as the Camscanner app all fit into this component because they allow teachers to use all available resources in order to teach their content.
