Managing Classroom Procedures
What is Component 2C?
Every classroom needs a schedule for the students to follow. Not only does this make for a more orderly and smoothly run classroom, but it also relieves some stress for the teacher and helps the students to be able to know what's coming next. When a classroom is run efficiently, it is better for the students because they can know what to expect and not be anxious about what is to come. A schedule provides structure.
Why do we need Component 2C?
We need this component in order to run our classrooms effectively and efficiently. A routine will cut down transition time, which in turn gives more time for the teacher to teach their lessons. In addition, it also helps that the students know the routine in the case that the teacher can not be at school and has a substitute. This way, the substitute does not necessarily need to know every single detail of the day, because the students will know what to do.
Elements of Component 2C:
The first element is Management of Instructional Groups. Students need to be able to work well with each other. Not only does this help them when they are assigned group work and make the class run smoothly, but it also creates a community within the class that will grow them as a whole as well as individual students. Management of groups also gives each student within a group responsibility to do their part. This teaches them the value of teamwork.
The second element is Management of Transitions. Transitions from one activity to the next should be as smooth as possible. This will allow the teacher to dedicate more time to his/her lessons and will also prepare the students for what is next.
The third element is Management of Materials and Supplies. The supplies in a classroom must be neat and organized and in place before an activity begins.
Element number 4 is Performance of Non-Instructional Duties. Examples of non-instructional duties are, attendance, field trip forms, permission slips, etc. These duties should be completed efficiently as they should not take up class time.
Finally, element 5 is Supervision of Volunteers and Paraprofessionals. These people are meant to help in the classroom. They should be made aware of how the classroom is run and what they should and should not do.
Possible Artifacts:
An established classroom schedule, lesson plans, student work, or Canva posters.
