Using Assessment in Instruction
What is Component 3D?
Component 3D is all about assessing our students. Teachers need to know how to effectively assess their students in order to track their progress, assess their own teaching, compare students, etc.
Why do we need Component 3D?
Teachers need to know how well their students are understanding content. Assessments should also be placed throughout units, chapters, and sections in order to see what the students are understanding and what they need to spend more time to learning. Teachers should be letting their students know what they need to study/work harder at and also what they are doing well. In addition, students should know the expectations being set for them.
Elements of Component 3D:
The first element of this component is Assessment Criteria. Students should know what the expectations are for them to reach. One way students can be made aware of these criteria and expectations is through a rubric.
Element 2 is Monitoring of Student Learning. Teachers should be using different types of assessment in order to track the progress of students. Teachers need to know what content areas their students need more help with or what they are excelling at.
Element 3 is Feedback to Students. Teachers should be letting students what they are and are not doing well at. If a student needs to spend more time practicing or studying a certain topic, then they should be made aware of that by the teacher. In addition, students also need to know what areas they are doing well in.
The last element is Student Self-Assessment and Monitoring of Progress. Students should be able to assess their own progress as well. They should be able to tell which topics they do not know as well and how they can fix that. The should also be able to assess when they have done a good job on projects, presentations, etc.
Possible Artifacts:
Possible artifacts include, examples of tests, rubrics, informal assessment, or Kahoot.
