Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques
What is Component 3B?
Component 3B focuses on questioning techniques. Teachers need to know how to get their students to discuss content topics by using certain techniques. These techniques will get the students talking and keep them interested. The techniques used also will push students to participate more. Lastly, a reason to use these is because they teach students why asking quality questions is important as well as how to do that.
Why do we Need Component 3B?
Questioning and discussion techniques encourage students to think critically about their content. These also get the whole class to participate in a way that anyone can contribute and be heard in the classroom. The techniques not only encourage participation, but also respect among students because every child should have the opportunity to speak and be heard during discussions.
Elements of Component 3B:
The first element of this component is Quality of Question and Prompts. When teachers ask their students a question, it should encourage them to use their higher-level thinking skills in order to answer it. In order to prompt this type of thinking, teachers must know different types of questions to ask in different circumstances.
Element 2 is Discussion Techniques. Teachers need to know how to get their students talking, but there also needs to be certain rules for class discussions. For example, everyone needs to be given a chance to voice their opinion, students are not permitted to interrupt their classmates, and everyone needs to be respectful.
The last element is Student Participation. Every student must be involved in class discussions.
Possible Artifacts:
Possible artifacts for Component 3B are; proof of a respectful classroom, lesson plans that involve class participation/discussion, examples of class discussions (i.e. a Socratic seminar), or Padlets.
